I. Course Description
This course is based on the Alabama Course of Study: Visual Arts Level One. Thos course is designed to address the needs of young artists who are eager to explore and experiment in creating two- and three- dimensional works of art. Students respond to personal experiences and conceptualized ideas as they learn to manipulate the elements of art and the standards built on students' prior knowledge of concepts and skills introduced in grades K-6.
II. Grading Assessment
Students will be graded based on Drawings 25%, Tests 25%, Daily Work 25%, and Projects 25%.
III. Course Objectives/Goals
- Create original works of art from direct observation.
- Create original works of art using reflective ideas, personal experiences, and imaginary content.
- Apply steps artists used in the production of art, including conceptualizing ideas and forms, refining ideas and forms, and reflecting on and evaluating both the process of production and the product.
- Apply the elements of art and principles of design to the production of two- and three- dimensional artwork.
- Demonstrate the use of traditional, digital, and multimedia techniques to relate works of art.
- Demonstrate safe and responsible handling of art materials including cleanup, storage, and replenishment of supplies where applicable.
- Describe personal, sensory, emotional, and intellectual responses to the visual qualities of a work of art.
- Evaluate selected works of art to determine the effectiveness of their organization.
- Compare works of art with functional and natural objects, aesthetics, criticism, and production in discussions of works of art.
- Describe historical themes, symbols, and styles associated with works of art from various cultures, times, and places, including major periods and movements.

V. Website
The art class will have a website. If you do not want your student to have pictures on the website please make a check on the back of the syllabus. The website is going to be a great tool for students to get make up work and for parents to see what is going on.
VI. Supply List and Fee
The St. Clair County Board of Education requires a $20 are fee that must be paid within the first nine weeks. This fee helps furnish new supplies every semester. Students are provided with many materials in art including, but not limited to, crayons, brushes, paint, color pencils, markers, scissors, rulers, clay, glazes, liquid glue, glue sticks, glue guns, construction paper, charcoal pencils, ebony pencils, pen and ink, clay, kiln use, etc.
Students who do not pay their fee will not be allowed to participate in class. Students who have not paid their fee will have an alternate assignment outside of the art room. I understand the $20 can be a burden. If there are problems and you would like to split the $20 into payments, feel free to contact me.
VII. Supply List
Poster board, three ring binder (at least 1"), 1 roll of paper towels, and wood pencils.
VIII. Extra Credit
Students will receive 10 points per test grade for each item they bring. Maximum of 40 points per 9 weeks. Students may bring extra credit for second 9 weeks early.
Extra credit items: colored cardstock, Lysol/Clorox/Generic brand cleaning wipes, sharpies, 4 rolls paper towels, and quart/gallon sized Ziploc bags.
IX. Art Show
At the end of each semester there is an art show. Each student has at least one piece of artwork in the art show. Everyone is encouraged to participate.
