Course Description
This course complies with the required contents for the Alabama
Course of Study. The primary
objective of this course is to teach students how to apply language and reading
strategies and express
meaning effectively, competently, and confidently in various written and spoken
modes. As a student,
you will master this course by correctly completing literature, grammar,
writing, and speech exercises.
If you pay attention and study on a regular basis, you will succeed in this
class!
Grading Policy
Grades will be determined according to a point system.

Make-up Work
If a student is absent, it is the
student's responsibility to collect his or her missed assignments.
A student is
allowed two days per excused absence to schedule make-up tests and
to complete
missed assignments. If a student does not make-up his or her work
within two days, he or she will
receive a grade of zero (0) for the missed work.
Classroom Procedures
1. Students should enter the classroom and immediately begin copying the DOL.
2. Each student will be given ten passes out of the classroom for the entire semester. "Use them wisely"
3. Student work should be headed with a name,
date, assignment description and class period.
It must be turned in according to
your class period in the assignment sorter.
4. Objectives and homework will be posted on the left side of the board each day.
5. Future vocabulary words and definitions will be posted
on the right side of the board throughout the week.
However those words and
definitions will be erased on the morning of the test.
Our Classroom Rules
1. Report to class on time. YOU should be sitting in your desk when the tardy bell rings.
2. Pay attention and listen closely the first time directions are given.
3. Show respect for yourself and others ideas, opinions, and property.
4. Bring all necessary materials to class.
5. Come to class ready and willing to learn.
Positive Consequences
1. A phone call and/or note to parents

3. Assignments Passes Note: these cannot be substituted for test, projects, journals, or essays.
Negative Consequences
1. A conference with Mrs. Palmer
2.A parent phone call/ Parent Conference
3. Demerits/ enforcement of school- wide discipline plan
Materials
1. Three-ring binder with five
dividers/sections labeled DOL, Vocabulary, Grammar,
Writing, and Tests and Quiz's
2. Wide ruled notebook paper
3. Black ink or pencils
4. Two-pocket folder with fasteners for your journal
5. Textbooks- Writer's choice: Grammar and Composition and Glencoe Literature: The Readers Choice
Attendance Policy
At the 6th
absence (undocumented and /or parent note combination) for either semester
a student losses credit for each block affected by the lack of attendance. For
example, a student
may lose credit for one block but not the other three. If a student misses more
than 30 minutes
of a particular block, he or she is considered absent from that block. Medical,
dental, and court
shall not count toward the allowable 5 absences.
