Course Outline
Unit One: Cooking Basics- basic techniques and information needed for successful labs
Unit Two: Quick Breads- lesson on quick breads such as biscuits, with lab to follow
Unit Three: Vegetables- lesson on vegetables and how to properly prepare them with lab to follow
Unit Four: Fruits- lesson on fruits and how to properly prepare them with lab to follow
Unit Five: Dairy- lesson on dairy products and how to properly prepare them with lab to follow
Unit Six: Grain products- lesson on grain products and how to properly prepare them with lab to follow
Unit Seven: Meat, Poultry, and Fish- lesson on the meat groups and how to properly prepare them with lab to follow
Unit Eight: Desserts (my favorite)- lesson on the wonderful dessert group and how to properly prepare items in this group with lab to follow
Unit Nine: World Cuisine- discover the various cuisines that have found homes her in the U.S. as well as cuisines around the world with lab to follow
Unit Ten: Convenience Foods- lesson on how easy and helpful convenience are and how to make them healthy with lab to follow
Unit Eleven: Eating Disorders- lesson on the effects of eating disorders on all ages
Instructional Philosophy
ALL students will have an EQUAL opportunity for success in this classroom. Academic, attendance, and discipline policies of this classroom and this school will be STRICTLY followed.
Course Description
This course content is based upon the Alabama Course of Study, Family and Consumer Sciences. This course allows students to explore family foods, careers, food production, and consumer needs throughout the lifespan. Course content will offer hands on activities and experiences conducted in the classroom and in the laboratory setting. This course is taught for an eighteen week period. There is no prerequisite for this class and is offered to ninth through twelfth graders.
Discipline Plan
Classroom Rules:
Treat yourself, others, and school property with RESPECT by your actions and language.
Come to class on time. Standing outside the door and rushing in after the bell has begun to ring will constitute a tardy. You must be INSIDE the room when the bell rings.
Begin warm up activity within one minute after the tardy bell has rung. Directions will be on the paper or on the board so that you may work quietly until I am ready to start class.
Attend to personal needs before coming to class. You are given five passes out. Once those five passes are used you have NO MORE PASSES OUT.
Do not bring any food, candy, or drinks into this classroom. This applies to EVERYONE! You are allowed a break and this is your time to eat and drink.
Talk at appropriate times and NOT while anyone is addressing the class. Be alert to what is going to what is going on in class. There are times in class that allows for a group to talk while others do not.
Listen carefully and follow directions the FIRST time they are given. Keep me happy and we will have a better classroom experience!
Bring required materials to class EVERY day.
Penalties for breaking rules:
1st Time: Verbal Warning and Name on the board
2nd Time: Writing Assignment on why you can't follow the rules.
3rd Time: Demerits and call to parents
4th: Removed from class until behavior can be controlled.
Severe Disruption: Students will automatically be sent to the office. (All of the following constitutes as a severe offense: fighting, use of profanity, destruction of school property, disrespect shown toward adults.)
Rewards:
The RIGHT to learn in a safe and POSITIVE climate.
Treats at various times throughout the semester.
Choice of seating.
Praise, praise, and MORE praise!!!
Classroom Guidelines
for Family and Consumer Sciences
A. Important Information
If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to get your work, make it up and TURN IT IN.
Missed work due to student activities must be turned in upon returning to class.
You may not make up work for other classes until ALL of your work for this class is complete. You may go at the END of the block if your work for my class is finished.
If you are absent on a test day, you have two days to for every day you are out to make up the test. If you do not ask to make up the test within the time frame you receive a ZERO.
Everyone will clean up before leaving. Cleaning up includes picking up trash from the tables abd off the floor, puttings books up correctly, and putting up any supplies used during class.
I dismiss the class, NOT the bell. You are to stay SEATED until the bell rings.
Daily warm ups should be started within a minute of the tardy bell ringing.
B. Grades
Daily/Class work counts as 25% of overall grade.
Labs/Projects count as 25% of overall grade.
Tests count as 50% of overall grade.
C. Needs for Class
Binder with paper
Pen or pencil- EVERYDAY
$30 fee due by the end of the first nine weeks of class
POSITIVE ATTITUDE
DO NOT come to class without a notebook and something to write with.
D. Expectations
Come to class ON TIME- EVERYDAY.
Bring required materials- EVERYDAY.
Have a POSITIVE attitude.
Put forth effort in all that you do.
Follow the classroom rules.
