Modern World History
Ms. Higdon: Instructor
This is a survey course of Modern World History from 1350 to present. Students will study key political, social, economic, and scientific events from modern times. Critical thinking and analysis are essential to this course because students acquire knowledge to study the past, its relationship to the present, and its impact on the future. Students will also address topics relating to local, state, national, and global issues.
Material will be presented through multimedia presentations, lecture, independent reading, handouts, class discussion, maps, geography and social studies resources relating to the AHSGE, videos, internet based activities, literature, music, and art.

Period I: Renaissance and Reformation (1350-1550)
Period II: The Age of Revolutions (1550-1800)
Period III: The Age of Industrialization (1800-1914)
Period IV: The World at War (1914-1945)
Period V: The Contemporary World (1945-present)

Grading Policies:
No late work will be accepted!! All assignments must contain name, date, and block. All assignments are to be completed on loose leaf paper with blue or black ink only. Spelling counts on all assignments! Papers not meeting these requirements will receive a zero.
Make-Up-Work
Make-Up-Work can not be make up during class! All Make-Up-Work will different in format than the original. Make up work can be made up before or after school. Each student receives 2 days per excused absence to make-up-work. Work not made up during the required time period will receive a zero.
Students attending a field trip with teacher permission will make-up-work the next day after the trip unless the work can be made up before or after the trip (time permitting that day). If the work is not made up, the student will receive a zero!
Exception Notice To Make-up Work:
Assignments that have been planned, announced, or posted are required to be made up the next class the students returns. If the student missed the day before a planned, announced, or posted assignments the students will take the assignments on the scheduled day. (Example: Map Test Friday, Make-up Test Monday). All assignments are posted on the board or announced in class. Key: pay attention and listen for them.
Course Evaluation
1st 9 weeks us worth 40%, and the second 9 weeks is worth 40% . The semester exam is worth 20%. The semester exam is comprehensive! Every night whether a student has written homework or not they need to review the material covered in class and read supplemental material in their textbook. Every Friday there will be a map test and a study guide for the next week will be issued. I will only accept the original study map!
History tests will be administered at the conclusion of a topic
Daily quizzes will given with/without warning.
All assignments are graded for accuracy, returned to the students for viewing, and filed for documentation.
1 bonus opportunity for the 1st 9 weeks is available and 1 bonus opportunity for the 2nd 9 weeks is available. No other bonus opportunities are available !!!
Key to succeeding in this class is to do the following on a daily basis: attend class, prepare for class, pay attention, listen, follow instructions, and complete work with accuracy.
All material studied in class correlates to the Alabama Course of Study and the AHSGE. (See pp. AL 6-11 and AL 16-18 in textbook)
MS. HIGDON'S CLASSROOM RULES:
1. Obey all rules listed in the SHS Code of Conduct
2. Show Respect at all times for yourself, teacher, classmates, and guests.
3. No profanity including the use of the word "sucks" pronounced, written, or spelled.
4. Be in assigned seat ready to work when the tardy bell rings, if not you are tardy.
5. Raise your hand to be acknowledged to speak.
6. NO food or gum allowed.
7. NO beauty items are to out or used during class.
8. No heads down on the desk. I consider this a refusal to participate.
9. Trash is thrown away as you exit the room.
10. Only Ms. Higdon dismisses you not the bell.
