Music History Research Paper #1
Criteria for First Report: This report is worth 300 test points!
Rough Draft 75 (due 2/12); Pictures 25 (due 2/16); Completed Report - 100; Poster 100; Do your best!
2 pages typed - double spaced, 12 font, Times New Roman, margins – first page 2” top, 1” right and left –
second page – 1” top, right and left sides. Include a cover page and a resources page.
Consider the following when writing your paper:
1. Biographical Data – birth/death dates and places, marriage, family, places lived, places worked
2. Historical Data – Period in musical history, types or style of music the person composed (Baroque, Romantic, symphonies, piano, etc.)
3. Find interesting facts about your person that will make him seem real
4. List a few of the most known pieces – telling a little about each one, including instrumentation used in each one.
5. Tell why you think the pieces have endured and have become a classic or why listeners love them.
6. Tell what impact or significance your person had in the history of music and later composers or performers that they have influenced.

*Poster should be a standard size – any color.
Suggestions: include pictures of composer, family members, places lived, monuments to them, interesting things about his life,
places he worked, where he is buried. Be sure to label each picture to explain why it is there and its significance.

Criteria for Second Report:
I. Paper should be 2 pages typed, 12 font, double spaced, margins – first page 2” top, 1” right and left –
second page – 1” top, right and left sides
1. Biographical Data – birth/death dates and places, marriage, family, places lived, places worked
2. Historical Data – Period/Style of Music the performer or composer wrote or performed
for example (1920s – Jazz, 1930s - Blues, 1940s – Big Band or Swing, 1950s Rock and Roll)
3. Find interesting facts about your person or group that will make them seem real and human.
4. List a few of the most known compositions or performances – telling a little about each one & instrumentation used.
5. Tell why you think the compositions have endured and have become a classic or why listeners love them.
6. Tell what impact or significance your person or group had in the history and development of music
The poster is graded on creativity, neatness, and originality. It may be any color but needs to be standard size. Put your composer's name as the title with the years of his life. Label each of the pictures. Provide visually as many details as possible about his/her life. Include pictures of him/her, family, places lived, album covers, interesting things in his/her life, and other pictures with famous people. Be sure to label each picture to explain what it is about and the picture's significance. Be creative! Your grade depends on it!
