As tenth grade English students, you are beginning a challenging phase in your English education. In addition to mastering the English language through grammar exercises, writing, reading, and speaking, you will be preparing to take the Alabama High School Graduation Exam in language and reading. As your teacher, I will give you the tools you will need to succeed not only in this class but also beyond the classroom. However, it is ultimately up to YOU to make the most of the time we have together. Only you can determine your level of success in this class. Always strive to do your very best in all that you do.
Classroom Rules: 1. Be in your assigned seat when the tardy bell rings.
2. Come to class prepared to work with all appropriate materials.
3. Raise your hand for permission to speak or leave your seat.
4. Face the front of the classroom at all times.
5. Disturbing other students will not be tolerated.
6. Class ends when I dismiss you.

Grading: Grades are determined on the point system. Grades will be weighted approximately as shown below:
Grammar, Literature, Vocabutoons, and Vocabulary Tests - 100
Research Paper - 200
Speech - 100
WOD Tests - 50
Daily Classwork/Homework - 5-40
Bonus points: Students will be given the opportunity for bonus points through completion of Daily Oral Language Exercises (DOLs). Two bonus points will be awarded for each DOL completed. Also, bonus points will be awarded to students who do not use all of their hall passes (see “Hall Passes”).
Makeup Work: It is the student’s responsibility to check the assignment calendar for any work missed because of an excused absence. The student has two (2) days to complete and turn in any makeup work. Work missed because of an unexcused absence will NOT be allowed to be made up, and the student will receive a zero (0) for the missed work. If a student misses a test and the absence is excused, it is the student’s responsibility to schedule a time convenient for both the student and teacher to make up the test.
Hall Passes: Students will be allowed four (4) passes out of my classroom per nine weeks for emergencies only. If a student has used all of his or her passes and must leave the classroom, a demerit will be given per trip out of the classroom. Use your passes wisely. Five minutes between classes is ample time to take care of personal business. Any student not using all of his or her passes will be awarded bonus points, two per hall pass.
Break: We do not take breaks outside of the classroom. I do not allow opened food, drinks (including water), candy, or gum in my classroom. Please take care of any eating or drinking needs you may have before you enter the classroom.
Notebook Tests: These are unannounced pop tests worth 100 points. The materials required for Notebook Tests are up-to-date WODs and DOLs. If you happen to miss class, you must make sure you get the WOD and DOLs from a classmate for the day or days you were absent. I will have the WOD spelled correctly on the assignment calendar; check the spelling! Since these are pop tests, it is necessary for you to bring your notebook to class every day.
