Who should take it? Seniors looking at a major 4-year college need to take the test by October to meet the deadlines. Seniors looking at smaller schools or community colleges should check the school's deadlines for applications. Juniors should take the ACT at least once during the junior year. How to register: Paper packets are available in the counselor's office or register online with a credit card at www.actstudent.org The school code for SHS is 012-530.
Girls ages 14-19: The Miss Alabama Teen USA pageant will be Sunday, November 9, 2008 at Samford University. See Mrs. Robertson before October 3rd if you are interested. Judging categories include interview, physical fitness/swimsuit, and evening gown. (No talent competition)
SENIORS THINKING ABOUT PURSUING A COLLEGE DEGREE? Please come by the
counselor's suite and pick up a copy of "Getting In". This book has specific
college information, including entrance requirements, estimated costs, and
deadlines for applications.
SENIORS: Please begin a student
resume that you will keep on your file for ALL scholarship offers and university
applications. It is important that you put this information on paper.

offers renewable scholarship for qualified students. Students must meet certain

Juniors and Seniors
Students interested in politics and national government will want to check out the Presidential Classroom program at www.presidentialclassroom.org. Programs begin in January and run through the summer. You must have a 3.0 GPA to qualify.
The John F. Kennedy Library Foundations invites students to write an original essay on the political courage of a US elected official. Contest information, registration, and submission of essay can be done through the website, www.jfklibrary.org. Finalists receive scholarship money. The first-place winner receives a $5,000 scholarship. Deadline is January 10, 2009.
Seniors:
BLSA, the association for legal professionals, will award three $1,000 scholarships in January 2009. Awards will be based on financial need, grade point average, and achievements. Deadline is December 15th. See Mrs. Robertson for the application.

Seniors interested in engineering at Auburn University should apply for the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering's AT&T Minority Engineering Program scholarship. Application online at www.eng.auburn.edu/scholarships or in the counselor's office. Deadline is March 1, 2009.
Seniors, check out www.collegeview.com . It has some excellent information regarding schools, financial aid, etc.
Seniors who work part-time, maintain a 2.5 GPA or greater, and have a financial need may qualify for the Burger King Scholars' $1,000 scholarship. Apply online at www.bk.com/scholars using the access key: BKS until January 31, 2009. $600,000 in scholarships was awarded in 2008!
Senior girls with an economic need, sound academic record and a minimum ACT of 22 may apply for the Linly Heflin Scholarship. This scholarship is $3,000 per year for 4 years if attending an Alabama, SACS accredited, college. Download the application at www.linlyheflin.org and submit all of the required documents by January 16, 2009. Don't wait! Start the applications process now.
AXA Achievement Scholarships are awarded to seniors who have displayed a desire to serve the community . $10,000 scholarships were awarded to one student from each state, along with 10 additional national winners. To learn more and apply, visit www.axa-achievement.com. Application deadline is December 15, 2008.
Seniors who have had a parent die or permanently disable from an on-the-job accident qualify for the Alabama Law Foundation's Kids' Chance Scholarship. Apply online at www.alfinc.org by May 1st. You must also apply for financial aid from the college or technical school you plan to attend.
Alabama Farmers Federation and Alfa is pleased to make scholarships available to selected new and presently enrolled Auburn University Students majoring in any curriculum in the College of Agriculture or School of Forestry, or to students majoring in Agricultural Engineering or Agricultural Education. The deadline is December 1, 2008. Applications are in the counselor's office.
The J. Craig and Page T. Smith Scholarship Foundation, Inc. offers First in Family scholarships for eligible students who may be the first in their mother's or father's families to attend college. Applications are available in the counselor's office. There is no ACT minimum and the GPA minimum is a C+. Deadline for applying is January 15, 2009.
The McKelvey Foundation offers $40,000 in scholarship to graduating seniors who have demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own business while in high school. This is not based solely on academic achievement or financial need. The application is online at www.mckelveyfoundation.org and the deadline is January 25, 2009.
New: Seniors interested in attending the University of Alabama and declaring a major in the College of Arts and Sciences should check out the Blount Undergraduate Initiative, a four-year program for outstanding students. Be a part of an elite group of students. Your application must be submitted, along with a college admission application, by December 1st. Applications are in the counselor's office.
New: Seniors interested in auditioning for the University of Alabama's Department of Theatre and Dance should check out www.as.us.edu/theatre for audition guidelines, application forms and program information. Auditions are November 22, 2008.
New: The KFC Colonel's Scholar's Program offers up to $5000 per school year for tuition, fees, books, and room/board. A graduate must have a 2.75 GPA or higher and be enrolling in a public university in the state of Alabama, with the intent to complete a bachelor's degree. Applications will be available online from December 1, 2008 through February 10, 2009 at www.kfcscholars.org.
